We last heard from Berlin brothers Andi and Hannes Teichmann, aka Gebrüder Teichmann, when we investigated the Karachi Files project on their NOLAND platform, which saw a range of European and Pakistani artists collaborating on one of 2016’s most exciting albums.
Now Gebrüder Teichmann are back with a new album, the first under their own name since 2011. Befitting NOLAND’s ambition to “articulate a transcultural underground for the 21st century”, Lost on Earth finds the brothers traversing the globe on the hunt for new environments to record in and musicians to jam with. The making of the album saw sessions take place everywhere from Mexico to Sri Lanka, with guests including Nigerian percussionist Wura Samba, Kenyan art collective Maasai Mbili, and rising ‘doom-folk’ merchant Perera Elsewhere.
To whet your appetite for next Friday’s release of Lost on Earth, MusicMap is delighted to premiere one of our favourite tracks from the album today. Hit play below to get ‘Higher’, a fresh, strident hip-hop track that combines Psykotek and Flexxo’s furious bars with a fractured sci-fi synth breakdown and an infectious hook from vocalist Ammara Brown:
‘Higher’ was recorded at Shoko Festival in Harare, Zimbabwe in 2012, where Andi Teichmann was playing with local stars Psykotek, Ammara Brown and Flexxo. (“Zimbabwe has a vibrant music scene and a fascinating political satire community”, Gebrüder Teichmann tell us, “even though artistic freedom is under pressure of the regime”.)
While the collaboration was originally intended to be a live performance, it went so well that they decided to record the vocals straight away in a little studio in Harare. After overcoming several power cuts that threatened to sabotage the session, Andi took the recordings back to Berlin where he and Hannes completed the track, and where Psykotek has since visited to play live and begin work on future collaborations.
Lost on Earth by Gebrüder Teichmann is released on September 15th via NOLAND. Pre-order it here, and if you’re Berlin on September 10th then head to Sage Beach for the Lost on Earth release party, where Gebrüder Teichmann will perform alongside Sandunes (Dasta, India), Delfonic (OYE Records, Germany), Dubmasta Selecta (SKP Records & Ten Cities, Ukraine) and Signal Deluxe (Pantamuzik, Mexico).
