Andrea ‘Populous’ Mangia may hail from southern Italy, but his heart now appears to belong to Portugal. It was while living there that his latest album Azulejos took shape, with the country’s capital city providing inspiration both through its “dramatically melancholic” atmosphere and the artist’s own field recordings (not to mention the record shops and flea markets which provided a ready supply of samples).
As Populous puts it, “Lisbon became both my studio and my muse”, and the result is a record of deep Latin folklorica laced with sumptuous electronic tinctures. Check out the title track below and pick up the full record via Wonderwheel Recordings now.
